Quitting silicones - My honest experience with natural hair care.

Helena Olsson

When I decided to switch from my traditional hair products to a different alternative, I had no idea how much it would affect my hair.

I had read about silicone-free shampoo and how these formulas can feel different for both hair and scalp, but I still wasn’t prepared for how my hair would feel during those first few weeks.

The Unexpected Transition

My hair, which used to feel soft and shiny, suddenly felt rough, frizzy, and unfamiliar. It was somehow oily and dry at the same time - which sounds contradictory, but that’s exactly how it felt.

I found myself asking:

"Why does my hair feel greasy after using silicone-free shampoo?"
"Is it normal to have dry hair after quitting silicones?"

Pretty quickly, I learned that this can simply be part of a transition phase. When you stop using products with silicones – which coat the hair strand and create a smooth surface – your hair may need some time to adjust. That shiny feeling I was used to? It wasn’t necessarily the condition of my hair itself, but rather the coating from the product.

How I Changed My Routine

Now that I use silicone-free shampoo and conditioner, I’ve had to think differently about how I care for my hair.

Now I:
- Use less shampoo
- Lather it in my hands before massaging it into my scalp
- Add a bit of water and rinse more thoroughly

I rinse carefully, and that’s something I’ve found helpful, especially when using products that contain oils like almond oil and shea butter. They can feel rich and conditioning, but if not rinsed out properly, they may leave the hair feeling heavier.

I also started using a Hair Mask once a week, and it’s become a regular part of my routine. After showering, I apply a few drops of Hair oil to the ends of my damp hair. It helps smooth the ends and makes styling feel easier for me.

It’s been a few months now, and I can genuinely feel a difference.

My hair feels stronger and more like itself.

It might not look as polished as it did with silicones, but it feels less coated and more true to its own texture.

Switching to silicone-free hair care has been a journey filled with patience and small discoveries along the way. It takes some time, but eventually your hair finds its own balance again. And for me, that feeling has been worth it.

Have you made the switch to silicone-free hair products too?
